Barbershop as a Third Space
Coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg, a third space is any place that exists outside of home (the first space) and work (the second space)
A neutral, social environment where real conversations happen and community bonds are formed.
Barbershops have long played this role in countless cultures. Beyond just grooming, they’re places of ritual, storytelling, mentorship, and transformation. In communities around the world, they’ve been quiet sanctuaries where men open up, reconnect, and feel seen.
